The convergence of IT and operational technology (OT) is no longer optional, but most utility organizations lack a unified architectural approach to manage this complexity. Without extending enterprise architecture (EA) to the OT domain, utilities risk innovating and developing OT solutions independent of the broader organization’s architectural strategy, leading to fragmented systems, redundant investments, and gaps in governance and resilience.
As utilities embrace digital transformation through initiatives like advanced metering infrastructure, distributed energy resources integration, and grid modernization, the traditional boundaries between IT and OT are rapidly dissolving.
